Oron LGA, Akwa Ibom State

Oron, with its headquarters in the town of Oron, is a coastal Local Government Area located in Akwa Ibom South senatorial district. Established as a division in August 1970 and later as an LGA in 1976, Oron has undergone significant boundary adjustments, resulting in the creation of Mbo, Okobo, Urue-Offong/Oruko, and Udung Uko LGAs. The 2022 projected population of Oron is 111,300, an increase from the 2006 census figure of 87,209. It covers an area of 126.5 km², with a population density of 880 people per km². Oron’s economy thrives on its abundant natural resources, including offshore crude oil and natural gas, fertile soils, and mineral deposits such as iron and silica sand. Fishing is a cornerstone activity, supported by the LGA’s coastal location, while farming, trade, and lumbering also contribute significantly .
