Ikono LGA, Akwa Ibom State

Ikono Local Government Area, with headquarters in Urua Inyang, is located within the South South region of Nigeria. Established in September 1996 after being carved out of Itu LGA, Ikono is one of the largest LGAs in Akwa Ibom State . The area is positioned at coordinates 5°12′37″N 7°47′38″E. It is in the Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial district. As of 2006, Ikono had a population of 131,673, which was projected to reach 168,000 by 2022. Covering an area of 197.4 km², the LGA has a population density of 850.9 people per km². Its postal code is 531 .Ikono's economy is driven by civil service, agriculture, and trade. The region is known for cultivating crops such as oil palm, kolanut, cocoa, maize, melon, cassava, and plantain. Local cuisine includes the unique "Efere Nsana" soup, often prepared during festivals. Markets like the Obo daily market and Fiongaran market are major trade hubs. Ikono also has mineral deposits, including salt, sand, and gravel, alongside potential crude oil reserves. Fishing, cottage crafts, and lumbering are secondary economic activities in the area.
