Irepodun LGA, Kwara State

Irepodun  Local Government Area (LGA) was established in 1976 from the defunct Igbomina Ekiti Local Government Area, with its headquarters located at Omu-Aran in Kwara South Senatorial District. Major towns in the LGA include Omu-Aran, Arandun, Oro, Esie, Ijan, Ajase-Ipo, Oko, Iludun, Agbamu, Sanmora, Aran-Orin, Oke Iya Ipo, Ilala, Omido, Igbooluore, and Ijan . The LGA covers an area of 734.3 km², with a population of 147,594 in 2006, projected to grow to 221,600 in 2022, giving it a density of 301.8/km²  . Irepodun LGA is renowned for its production of yams and grains. The area is also rich in mineral resources, including Granite, Talc, Columbite, Tantalite, Turnstone, Feldspar, Quartz, and Mica. A key tourist attraction is the Esie Museum, the first museum established in Nigeria in 1945. It holds a remarkable collection of over 1,000 soapstone images, reputed to be the largest globally, and hosts an annual festival in April . Irepodun LGA is also home to Landmark University.
