Owerri West LGA, Imo State

Owerri West Local Government Area is located in the central part of Imo State, with its headquarters in the town of Umuguma. It was established in 1996, following its separation from the former Owerri Local Government Area. It is amongst the local governments that make up the Imo East senatorial zone. The population was 101,754 in the 2006 census, with a projected population of 141,400 by 2022. The area covers  286.8 km². Owerri West LGA is home to notable landmarks including the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) and the State Secretariat.
