Ikole LGA, Ekiti State

Ikole is a Local Government Area (LGA) in Ekiti State, Nigeria, with its headquarters located in Ikole town. The LGA falls within one of Ekiti's senatorial districts. Created as part of the state’s local governance structure, Ikole had a recorded population of 170,414 in 2006, which was projected to increase to approximately 255,200 by 2022. Covering an area of 1,034 square kilometres, the population density now stands at around 246.9 people per square kilometre. Ikole’s economy is driven primarily by agriculture and lumbering, activities that are supported by the area’s fertile lands and abundant water resources. The Itapaji Dam, located within the LGA, is a key asset with potential for small-scale hydroelectric power, as well as water supply for local communities and irrigation. The Oye River, which feeds into the Ele River, enriches Ikole’s plains with fertile deposits, enabling agricultural activities throughout the year. Additionally, the nearby Ero Dam in Moba enhances farming water resources. The area is historically significant as it hosts Nigeria’s first large-scale cattle ranch, the Oke Ako Cattle Ranch, set up by the former Western Region Government. Ikole is also home to the state’s Agriculture Development Project, which promotes agricultural growth and development. A popular destination in Ikole is the Itapaji Water Dam, which attracts visitors from across the region .
