Aiyekire LGA, Ekiti State

Gbonyin Local Government Area (officially Aiyekire in Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution) was established on October 1, 1996, with its headquarters at Ode Ekiti . Created from Ekiti East Local Government, Gbonyin is one of sixteen LGAs in Ekiti State, with High Chief Zacheaus Adebowale Ofi as its first chairman. It is a local government within the Ekiti South Senatorial District of Ekiti State, Nigeria. The LGA spans 459 square kilometres and had a population of 147,999 in the 2006 census, which grew to an estimated 221,600 by 2022. This increase brings the current population density to approximately 482.8 people per square kilometre. Economic activities in Gbonyin include timber processing, rice and garri production, palm oil and kernel processing, block making, bakeries, furniture production, and hospitality services. Small-scale trades and services like motorcycle repair, fashion design, hairdressing, and okada (commercial motorcycle) transportation also support the local economy.
