Bakassi Local Government Area was created out of Akpabuyo Local Government Area on December 12, 1996, under the Cross River South Senatorial District and has its headquarters at Ikot Effiom (formerly administered from Ikang). It had a population of 31,641 in 2006 and is projected to be 52,375 in 2022. Bakassi has a population density of about 63 people per square kilometer and covers an area of 826.07 square kilometers. The people of Bakassi are predominantly engaged in fishing due to the area's rich coastal and marine resources, while farming and trading are also important economic activities.
